Chapter 5

Genevieve continued; “These old TV’s were full of some kind of tubes, maybe fifty, and the malfunction of any one of them would make the TV stop working. Dad would bring me with him to the electronics store. He’d bring the ‘tubes’ which he thought might not be working and test them in a machine at the front of the store. After locating the right receptacle he’d plug them in. If they lit up they were okay. If not they had to be replaced. But this time Uncle Schaller was wearing whatever remained of the tubes on his head. So, dejected, rejected, and incompetent Uncle Schaller just left as instructed; black face and all. Dad seemed disappointed and I started laughing again.”

Dad angrily said; “What’s so funny?”

Trying to deflect with an indirection which was not a complete lie, I said; “Uncle Schaller’s black face. He’s going to walk home looking like that.” That seemed to be of no concern to Dad. So, Dad got another TV from somewhere and whenever so required this time he always monkeyed with the bulbs himself.

........ Speaking of bulbs, I am now going to view the flowers, accompanied or not.”

Genevieve went out the front door and was not surprised to see that led by bold Sunshine the kittens had followed her. He had always seemed to have some sort of un-defined magical

powers, though Pablo was the only one who could come close to being able to first-hand-testify to Sunshine’s prowess. Yet.

That was the result of his personal physical transformation after Sunshine’s touch, which nobody else seemed to notice. The fact that the others seemed to think that Pablo was always an attractive Lab puppy rather than the gruff, scary dog he had seen himself as being prior to Sunshine’s touch had put a bit of a crimp in the perceived value of his possible testimony; a personal doubt based on his perceptions of the reactions of others.

This questioning thought process of Pablo’s was periodically and inescapably on his mind as the likely result of having had his snout in many books. Now that he had the regular company of Rufus those thoughts were becoming more and more infrequent. The thoughts were currently stirred whenever Pablo saw Sunshine in his books.

And for his part, Sunshine had no idea of his being

“magical.” To himself he was just Sunshine after he had learned his name. To Pablo he was magical, though Pablo was still testing here and there; and Sunshine did not know of either consideration. If told, he would most likely have been confused.

Sunshine tailed Genevieve who had rushed right to the new flowers and buds. He stopped a bit short of her, only because he was being careful not to accidentally trample the fragile beginners on land with which he and more so they were unfamiliar.
