CONFESSION OF SINS

How many times does the word "confession" appear in the Bible (look up Strong's concordance)
What does Confess/Confession mean? Note: look for a better concept of confession and put the source.
- To declare a mistake, misdemeanor or crime committed, especially to the police or to a judge or court of law.
- Stating something that was kept secret for any reason.
What does the Bible say about confession of sins? To better define the concept of confession in the light of the Word
We must confess our sins before the Father, Jesus himself urges us to this within prayer:
Matthew 6:12 |
And forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven our debtors. |
In the model prayer Jesus himself teaches us to ask God for forgiveness directly.
Other examples that we can find in the Bible:
1 John 1:9 |
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. |
Psalm 32:5 |
I have declared my sin to you, and I have not covered up my iniquity. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord; And you forgave the wickedness of my sin. Selah |
Proverbs 28:13 |
He who covers up his sins will not prosper; But he who confesses them and turns away will obtain mercy. |
Psalm 51:4 |
Against you, against you alone I have sinned, And I have done evil in your sight; That you may be righteous in your word, And considered pure in your judgment. |
David in the psalms, begs God to forgive him, they are his prayers, he confesses his sin and he also confesses that God himself is the one who sees when we sin. In addition, we also see that the authority for the forgiveness of sins is from God.
Jesus faced a lot of opposition when He carried out His ministry because He was not recognized as God and He Himself declared about Himself: "And that you may know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins... To you I say that all your sins are forgiven, arise and walk." He Himself declared the authority to have to forgive sins, to heal, and to show signs and wonders that announced that the kingdom of heaven had drawn near. This authority He manifested in all His ministry, to His disciples He delegates the authority that Christ gives to His church to announce the good news and that we may know that in Him we have forgiveness of sins.
Nowhere in Scripture is the concept of confession of sins taught to a priest. Starting with the fact that the New Testament does not teach that there must be priests in the New Covenant. Instead, the New Testament teaches that all believers are priests. 1 Peter 2:5-9 describes believers as a "royal priesthood" and a "holy nation." Revelation 1:6 and 5:10 both describe believers as "kings and priests." In the Old Covenant, the faithful had to approach God through the priests. The priests were mediators between God and the people. The priests offered sacrifices to God on behalf of the people. That is no longer necessary, because through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we can approach the throne of God with confidence (Hebrews 4:16). With Jesus' death, the veil of the temple was torn in half, thus destroying the symbol of the dividing wall between God and humanity. We can approach God directly by ourselves, without the use of a human mediator. Why? For Jesus Christ is our High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-15; 10:21), and the only mediator between God and us (1 Timothy 2:15). The New Testament teaches that there should be elders (1 Timothy 3), deacons (1 Timothy 3), bishops (Titus 1:6-9), and pastors (Ephesians 4:11)—but no priests.
1 Peter 2:5-9 |
5 You also, as living stones, be built up as a spiritual house and a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 Therefore the Scripture also contains: Behold, I lay in Zion the chief cornerstone, chosen, precious; And whoever believes in him will not be ashamed. m 7 To you who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, The stone that the builders rejected, He has become the head of the corner; m 8 and: A stone of stumbling blocks, and a rock that causes them to fall, because they stumble in the word, being disobedient; for which they were also destined. God's People 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that you should proclaim the powers of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light; |
Revelation 1:6 |
and made us kings and priests to God his Father; to him be glory and empire forever and ever. Amen. |
Revelation 5:10 |
and you have made us kings and priests to our God, and we will reign on the earth. |
NEW PACT | |
Hebrews 4:16 |
Let us, then, approach the throne of grace with confidence, that we may obtain mercy and find grace for timely help. |
Hebrews 4:14-15 |
Jesus the Great High Priest 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has pierced the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast to our profession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who was tempted in all points according to our likeness, yet without sin. |
Hebrews 10:21 |
and having a high priest over the house of God, |
1Timothy 2:15 |
But he will be saved by begetting children, if he remains in faith, love, and sanctification, with modesty. |
1 Timothy 3 |
Bishops' Requirements 3 Faithful word: If anyone longs for a bishopric, he desires a good work. 2 But the bishop must be blameless, the husband of one wife, sober, prudent, decorous, hospitable, and able to teach; 3 Not given to wine, not quarrelsome, not greedy for filthy gain, but gentle, mild, not covetous; 4 Let him rule his house well, let him keep his children in subjection in all honesty 5 (for how can he who does not know how to rule his own house take care of the church of God?); 6 Not a neophyte, lest he be puffed up and fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 He must also have a good report from outsiders, so that he will not fall into disrepute and into the snare of the devil. Deacons Requirements 8 Deacons are also to be honest, without duplicity, not given to much wine, not greedy for filthy gain; 9 That they keep the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 And these also should be put to the test first, and then exercise the diaconate, if they are blameless. 11 Let women also be honest, not slanderers, but sober, faithful in all things. 12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, and let them govern their children and their houses well. 13 For those who exercise the diaconate well gain for themselves an honorable degree, and much confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. The Mystery of Piety 14 This I write to you, though I hope to come soon to see you, 15 So that if I tarry, you may know how you should conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16 And indisputably great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen of the angels, Preached to the Gentiles, Believed in the world, Received up in glory. |
Titus 1:6-9 |
6 Whoever is blameless, the husband of one wife, and has believing children who are not accused of dissipation or rebellion. 7 For the bishop must be blameless, as God's steward; not proud, not wrathful, not given to wine, not quarrelsome, not greedy for dishonest gain, 8 but a host, a lover of what is good, sober, just, holy, master of himself, 9 Withholding the faithful word as it has been taught, that he may also be able to exhort with sound teaching and convince those who contradict. |
Ephesians 4:11 |
And he himself constituted some, apostles; others, prophets; others, evangelists; to others, pastors and teachers, |
When it comes to confession of sins, in 1 John 1:9 believers are told to confess their sins to God. God is faithful and just to forgive our sins, if we confess them to Him. James 5:16 speaks of confessing our transgressions "to one another." But this is not the same as confessing one's sins to a priest, as the Roman Catholic Church teaches it. Nowhere are priests/church leaders mentioned, within the context of James 5:16. Moreover, James 5:16 does not link the forgiveness of sins with the confession of transgressions "one to another."
1 John 1:9 |
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. |
James 5:16 |
Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The efficacious prayer of the righteous can do much. |
The Roman Catholic Church bases its practices of confession to priests primarily on the Catholic tradition. Catholics point to:
John 20:23 "To whom you remit sins, they are remitted; and whoever you withhold them, they are retained" |
Based on this verse, Catholics claim that God gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins, and that this authority was bequeathed to the successors of the apostles, meaning to the bishops and priests of the Roman Catholic Church. There are many problems with this interpretation:
- John 20:23 nowhere mentions confession of sins.
- John 20:23 nowhere promises, or even suggests, that the authority to forgive sins would pass to the successors of the apostles. Jesus' promise was specifically addressed to the apostles.
- Nowhere in the New Testament is it stated that the apostles would have heirs to their apostolic authority. Similarly, Catholics point to Matthew 16:19 and 18:18 (withholding or remitting) as evidence for the Catholic Church to have the authority to forgive sins. The same three points above apply equally to these Scriptures.
When Jesus speaks regarding the verse in John 20:23, He is not referring to man (human being) having the authority to forgive sins because that authority belongs to God alone; for He Himself said of Himself:
Lucas 5:24 "That they may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins," he said to the paralytic, "To you I say, get up, take up your mat, and go home." |
Before ascending to the heavens he declared:
Mateo 28:18-20 "Then Jesus came to them and said to them, 'All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And I tell you the truth, I will be with you always, even to the end of the age." |
Jesus Himself declared
Again, nowhere in Scripture is the concept of confession of sins taught to a priest. We must confess our sins to God (1 John 1:9). As New Covenant believers, we don't need mediators between God and us. We can go directly to God by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for us. 1 Timothy 2:5 says, "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."
1 John 1:9 |
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. |
1 Timothy 2:5 |
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Christ, |
FINAL CONCLUSIONS
Having concluded with this document of great esteem and value for the brothers in the faith, hoping that it will fulfill the purpose of refuting false doctrines and be of help to the understanding of the Faith, based entirely on the verses of the Bible, thus showing as well as the traditions, laws, arguments of people of high importance in authority or social class, they can be seen as extremely contradictory with what God really shows us in his Word, in this way we get rid of the doctrinal error that can be very serious, so much so that there are already judgments destined by God to those people who teach his Scriptures in a bad way, to those who lead his sheep astray, to add to the Bible, that they take away messages, that pervert the gospel, among others. As final conclusions we will put these points to stimulate theological and spiritual growth, setting our eyes on Christ:
THE MAJESTY OF CHRIST
HEBREWS 4:16
"Christology" is simply the study of who Jesus is and what that means for the lives of those who believe in him in order to attain salvation. The book of Hebrews provides an especially strong Christology in describing who Jesus is, detailing his many functions in relation to the Old Testament Scriptures, and outlining what all of this means for every Christian:
*Jesus is heir of all things (Hebrews 1:2), which means that as God's "Firstborn" Son, Christ will inherit infinite glory and honor.
He is the one through whom God made the world (1:2), the creative agent behind the universe, and the one who still manages its creation.
He is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of God's person (1:3), the one who perfectly reflects God's majesty and is God Himself in the flesh.
*Jesus sustains the world by his power and sits at the right hand of God (1:3). He is the living Savior who rules, who provides daily for His creation, and also oversees the universe.
* Being one with God, Jesus is better than the angels (1:4)—as glorious and amazing as they are—and He is also better than Moses (3:3) and all the prophets.
He is the author of our salvation (2:10), the founder of the effort to "bring many sons to glory."
He is the devil's destroyer (2:14), overcoming death and Satan through his resurrection.
*As a merciful high priest (2:17), Jesus presented his own blood as a perfect sacrifice for human sin.
*Likewise, as high priest of believers, he can feel compassion for our weaknesses (4:15), because he experienced life as a human being on earth.
*As an eternal priest, Jesus always makes intercession before God for his people (7:25).
*Jesus is the mediator of a higher covenant (8:6), replacing the old covenant with its earthly tabernacle and the need for animal sacrifices.
He is our model for enduring the hostility of sinful people (12:2-3). When we are discouraged, we can find great strength and inspiration in Christ's willingness to endure under persecution.
*Jesus is the great Shepherd of the sheep (13:20), the one who cares for us and will ultimately lead us to our eternal home.
THE COMPASSIONATE HIGH PRIEST
HEBREWS 5:1-10
The priests of the Old Testament had many rules to follow. God was not someone I couldn't flippantly approach; priests had to follow certain steps in order to prepare to meet God (Lev 16; Hebrews 5:1-3). The high priest could only enter the Holy of Holies on specific occasions to intercede between God and His people.
Jesus is superior to every high priest of the Old Testament (Hebrews 4:14-7:28). He became both the sacrifice for sin and the presiding high priest over the atonement. Jesus is fully human: he is able to empathize with those for whom he makes atonement.
And he is completely God: he can atone for the sins of the people in a full and absolute way. Jesus is also the only high priest who can introduce believers directly into the presence of the Father.
When He died on the cross for the sins of mankind, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom (Mark 15:38). This meant that it was now possible to draw closer to God and that people now had direct access to Him through Jesus rather than having to go through an intermediary (Hebrews 4:16).
The major religions of the world teach that God dwells at a great distance from His people and that one can approach Him only with great apprehension. Christianity teaches that Jesus has made a way for God to be with his people.
NAMES AND TITLES OF JESUS IN REVELATION
John described God as "the one who is and who was and who is to come" (Rev. 1:4; 4:8). Their vision of heaven includes the image of four creatures who worship God day and night, and they also allude to God as the one "who was and who is and who is to come" (v.8). This phrase echoes Exodus 3:14-15, where God referred to Himself as "I am." (Jn 8:58), and thus declared himself to be God. John reinforces this reality by declaring that not only is God as he claims to be now, but that he is also the same God who was throughout history, and who will remain the same God in the future. With this eternal faithfulness in mind, we consider the names for Jesus revealed throughout the book of John.

MORE THAN 300 MESSIANIC PROPHECIES FULFILLED BY JESUS OF NAZARETH.
As a last point and to close with a flourish, we have attached exactly 365 (three hundred and sixty-five) prophecies fulfilled to the letter by Jesus, as they were announced in the Old Testament until their fulfillment in the New Testament, but not explained since it would be too long a document. The only purpose which has been purposed in our hearts for attaching them is this, that we may consider that there are reasons of great value for heeding the Bible as the Word of God. This is in one of the reasons, the fulfilled prophecy. There are many more, biblical, archaeological, and scientific.
Note: Between the Old Testament and the New Testament there is a period of 400 years of silence. There are prophecies that were announced up to 1500 years before Christ. And they are announced by the mouths of different prophets, in different places, different times, different social classes; but all fulfilled in Jesus Christ the Son of God. Others will be fulfilled at His second Coming. As an interesting fact, we know that to date 2,000 (two thousand) prophecies have been fulfilled out of the 2,500 (two thousand five hundred) prophecies announced in his Word.
