WHAT DOES GENESIS 3:15 TELL US?

"I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and hers; his seed will crush your head, but you will bite his heel."
● It is a Messianic prophecy.
● It does not refer to a struggle in the Garden of Eden.
● Language is figurative.
● It refers to the life-death confrontation between the adversary and the human family born of the woman (Genesis 3:20 "The man called his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of every living thing.")
● In Hebrew, the word "Seed" can be both singular and plural, and may refer to:
To the totality of descendants, regardless of their number, or to a particular descendant, the text includes both meanings.
Acts 3:25 |
"You are heirs of the prophets and of the covenant that God established with our forefathers when He said to Abraham, 'All the peoples of the world will be blessed through your seed.' |
Galatians 3:16 |
"Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his descendants. Scripture does not say, "And to the descendants," as referring to many, but, "And to thy descendants," implying one one, which is Christ." |
Galatians 3:19 |
"So what was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions until the seed to whom the promise was made should come. The law was promulgated through angels, through a mediator." |
1 Peter 1:23 |
"For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of everlasting seed, through the word of God that lives and abides." |
1 John 3:9 |
"No one who is born of God practices sin, for the seed of God abides in him; he cannot practice sin, because he was born of God." |
● It refers to the permanent opposition that God's people suffer from their enemies and at the same time anticipates the emergence of a special foundation: Jesus Christ, who will ultimately destroy the serpent.
Romans 16:20 |
"Very soon the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet. May the grace of our Lord Jesus be with you." |
Revelation 12:9-10 |
"9 And the great dragon was cast out, the old serpent, which is called the devil and Satan, which deceives the whole world; He was cast down to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. 10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, Now is the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ; for the accuser of our brethren has been cast out, who accused them before our God day and night." |
Hebrews 2:14 |
"Therefore, inasmuch as the children partook of flesh and blood, he also partook of the same, that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil." |
● This verse contains the first implicit promise of God's plan of redemption for the world. He predicts the final victory for mankind and for God over satan and evil by prophesying a spiritual conflict between the foundation of the woman (the Lord Jesus Christ) and the foundation of the serpent (Satan and his followers).
Here God promised that Christ would be born of a Woman. (Isaiah 7:14 "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.")
And that he would be "wounded" by his crucifixion. However, he would rise from the dead to completely destroy ("wound") satan, sin, and death in order to save the human race.
Isaiah 53:5 |
"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; The chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his stripes we are healed." |
Matthew 1:20-23 |
"20 And when he was thinking about this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, and said to him, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she shall bear a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 All this came to pass that what the Lord had spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled, when he said, 23 Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and thou shalt call his name Immanuel, which is translated, God with us." |
John 12:31 |
"Now is the judgment of this world; now the prince of this world will be cast out." |
Acts 26:18 |
"That thou mayest open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness unto light, and from the power of Satan unto God; that they may receive, through the faith that is in me, forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified." |
Romans 5:18-19 |
"18 Therefore, as through one man's transgression came condemnation to all men, so through one man's righteousness justification of life came to all men. 19 For just as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one man's obedience will many be made righteous." |
1 John 3:8 |
"He who practices sin is of the devil; because the devil sins from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God appeared, to destroy the works of the devil." |
Revelation 20:10 |
"And the devil who deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet were; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever." |
