The Girl from Mönchengladbach

She became a bath attendant after school,

And she is a really cool one.

The girl always seems so serious

—Not a laugh in sight.

Where does she hide her cheerfulness?

Her facial features can be compared

To the severity of a gravestone.

Is she possessed by demons?

You hardly ever see her brightly.

Is she really that chilly,

Or is it part of the cold therapy?

Oh, girl from the Lower Rhine!

Are you really colder than winter?

How can I amuse you without buying you ten beers?

Is frozen fish from the freezer box?

One of your favorite foods?

Are you missing the right man to play with?

Maybe someone from the land of the Eskimos?

Or do you not care from where?

Is there a magic formula, a trick,

To eliminate your gloomy expression?

Shall I try a compliment?

You are indeed very pretty,

And you have beautiful, long hair.

You could play in the top league

If only laugh lines adorned your face!

Oh, girl from the Lower Rhine,

Are you really colder than winter?

Were you in love with the former foal Matthias Ginter?

You are sad that he plays in Freiburg today?

If you were a foal, you would be

A heavy horse, wouldn’t you?

Why do I never meet you in the bar district?

Do you prefer skiing in the Alpenpark Neuss?

Oh, girl from the Lower Rhine,

Are you really colder than winter?

How can I possibly amuse you?

Do I have to congratulate you on parking in reverse?

Are you pondering my lines?

Or can’t you help but grin?

Oh, girl from the Lower Rhine,

There are worlds between us.

Shouldn’t we end this dilemma?

Take me in your arms quickly;

I’ll even put up with catching a cold.

Very well, girl from the Lower Rhine.

Men generally tend to exaggerate.

That also applies to me,

But in the last verses,

I do without the stingers.

Dear girl from the Lower Rhine,

Don’t drive me out of your heart;

I’m only joking, and I’m just flirting again.

In my opinion, you take your job seriously,

And you are competent and conscientious.

I hope,

That I will be remembered by you forever,

As the poet who managed

To crack up the girl from Mönchengladbach

Laugh loud out.

Has he?
