The yard is a quiet rebellion of moss and dandelions. A rusted wheelbarrow leans against a sugar maple, and a blue jay heckles the silence from its perch.
Beyond the house, the Canaan, Connecticut woods stretch out like a faded tapestry; oak, birch, and the occasional sassafras, all whispering secrets to the wind.
Inside, the house exhales. The walls, lined with faded wallpaper patterned in vines and urns, seem to lean inward, as if listening. A large, thin Queen Anne highboy gracefully presides over the living room. It rests safely against one wall. Its brass, modified bat wing drawer pulls, and decorative escutcheons seem to be winking, while the two carved shells’ eyes are wide open.
