The docent emerges, draped in velvet and ambiguity. His badge reads “Interpretation Specialist,” rather than “Guide,” but the letters shimmer and rearrange themselves as he speaks.
“You’ve found Cuypers’ refusal,” he says. “Not the man, but the gesture. He sculpted what he could not explain.”
Finn frowns. “So it’s not a noble?”
The docent smiles. “It’s neither here nor there. He was noble in forgetting, aristocratic in misdirection. You’ve honored him by misreading.”
Susie steps closer. “What was his name?”
The docent gestures to the empty plinth. “He had many. Each visitor gives him one. Today, he is yours.
Back in their room, Finn and Susie do not speak. The silence is not absence but staging. The velvet hush folds around them like a proscenium veil, thick with implication. The castle’s corridors have not released them; they’ve merely paused the performance.
Susie moves to the window, drawn by a flicker. Below, the statue they misnamed; the noble who never was, has shifted. Not moved,
