Still Life

Page 220

Ten thousand titles, maybe more.

People bowing without speaking,

People indexing while leaking,

People writing texts that no one dared to read—

They all agreed:

It’s safer here

In the sounds of compliance.

“Fools,” said Gregory, “you do not know

Silence like a chandelier glows.

Hear my flicker that I might teach you,

Grieve my wiring that I might reach you.”

But my words, like misremembered rites,

Fell out of sight

And echoed back

As the sounds of compliance.

And the silence bowed and took its place

In the glossary of sacred waste.

And the chandelier softly blinking

Mocked the solemn tone of thinking.

And the signs said, “The words of the prophets are revised

And monetized—

Then filed away

In the sounds of compliance.”
