Lady Sigh gasped. "He's ..... indexing the sacred blur."
Finn panicked and began unlocking doors at random. One revealed a room where all deleted works whispered to each other in forgotten dialects. Another opened onto a hallway of ritual refusals, where Susie stood, arms crossed, holding a glossary bound in paradox.
She stepped forward.
"You annotate," she said, "but do you peruse?"
The Annotator faltered. Perusal was not his domain. He annotated, clarified, and concluded-but he had never witnessed without intent.
Susie opened the glossary. The words inside rearranged themselves. The chandelier began to swing in approval. Sir Flinchington bowed to the Annotator's shadow. Lady Sigh forecast "ritual fog with a chance of mythic disruption."
The Annotator, overwhelmed by ambiguity, dropped his quill. It rolled into the room of locked doors and was never seen again.
