“It’s .... not,” he said, gently. “I mean, it’s fine. Totally fine. But Marla, you do know your parents posted about it on Facebook? Like, a lot. There was a whole slideshow. With music.”
She frowned. “What?”
“And your mom’s memoir? ‘Our Journey to Marla’? It was a bestseller. There was a TED Talk.”
Marla’s face went pale. “No. No, I ... this was supposed to be mine. My moment.”
Theo nodded sympathetically. “I get that. But it’s kind of ..... public domain at this point.”
She looked stricken. “So you already knew?”
“Everyone does. I just didn’t want to be the guy who says, ‘Yeah, we know,’ and then you cry and I become the villain in your emotional coming of age montage.”
Marla sat back, stunned. “I thought I was being brave.”
“You were,” Theo said. “Just retroactively.”
They sat in silence, watching a duck chase a pigeon with surprising malice.
