The road curves gently, and the trees open up to reveal a stretch of meadow, dotted with cows and the occasional rusted tractor. The world feels momentarily timeless.
“You think there’s something in the library?” Finn asks, finally.
Susie smiles, but it’s a quiet smile. The kind that doesn’t reach her eyes.
“I think there’s something in me that needs to be in that room, at least for a while. There’s a castle in Utrecht. Still standing. Still occupied. William I, Prince of Orange’s cousins, I think. Or maybe just distant shadows of the House of Orange. They rent rooms to guests now. Let in anyone with the coin of the realm to live among the tapestries. It’s survival masquerading as culture.”
“So why go now?” Finn asks.
Susie’s eyes stay on the road.
“Because I want to see what happens when history gets tired. When it starts letting strangers in. I want to know if the stories I studied are still breathing, or just embalmed in velvet.”
