Still Life

Page 145

At night he searches the desert for the Eschaton court he once played with precision, refusing to acknowledge the fact everyone else sees without eyes; that it has been banished by the UniParty.

He claims to have discovered a new genre; Hallucino-Criticism-where literary analysis is performed under the influence of obscure compounds like "Narrativol," "Plotazine," and "Footnotex." His lectures are incoherent masterpieces, delivered to no one, recorded on cassette tapes, and mailed to defunct university departments.

A sample Pemulis rant, transcribed from Tape 47B:

"You don't read the literature, man; you ingest it. You metabolize the semiotics. You sweat the subtext. Blake? Blake was pure tryptamine. DFW? That guy was a walking benzodiazepine. And Pynchon? Pynchon is a fungus. He grows in your margins."

He's occasionally spotted at underground lit festivals, ranting about "the Fry Prophet" and trying to sell his new manuscript; “The Annotated Void: A Pharmacological Exegesis.” It contains no original text; just old “The Spirit” comic books and newspaper insertions, footnotes, drug interactions, and marginalia written in disappearing ink.
