But rebels, known as The Illuminates, smuggle fragments of Blake's poetry in coded graffiti, in the margins of cookbooks, in the lyrics of bootleg Patti Smith covers. They believe that reading Blake without preface is a form of spiritual awakening, a rupture in the veil of sanctioned reality. Their motto: "Vision is not a crime."
