Suddenly an insistent and familiar female voice arouses him. It was his dream, Susie. The kettle hums louder now, no longer considering, but preparing to act.
Finn stirs beneath a wool throw, the kind woven in muted tartans and passed down without ceremony. His eyes flutter open, not with alarm, but with the reluctant grace of someone surfacing from a dream that still clings to the edges of his mind like fog on a lake.
The room remains unchanged, but something in the air has shifted, like a page turned in a book he wasn’t reading.
Susie stands over him, arms crossed, her silhouette framed by the morning light that spills through the lace curtain. She’s dressed for motion; boots laced, coat cinched, hair pulled back with the kind of precision that suggests she’s already halfway to wherever she’s going.
