she knew it, but she did. Lucien was awake. Restless. Unsettled. Just as she was.

Bracing herself against the easel, her hands clasping onto its edges, the connection between them pulsing her senses.

He’s going to come back. I know he is.

She turned back to the painting. The crashing waves and the erupting fire, their battle frozen in time.

And when he does... will we create something new? Or will we destroy everything around us?

The silence in his apartment screamed in his ears.

He sat on the edge of his bed, staring down at the calling card in his hands.

The blinds were half-closed, and the light filtering through the gaps cast faint, slatted lines across the room. It gave the illusion of dusk —shadowy, uncertain.

He turned the disk over again and again, his thumb tracing the edges. He didn ’t even know why he was still holding it. It wasn’t going to give him answers.

He set it on the bedside table and rubbed his hands over his face. The words from the dream echoed endlessly:

“The universe is a number or behaves like a number. It is infinitesimally big and infinitesimally small. We exist at a point in the chain where it realizes into matter. ”

His hands fell to his lap as he stared at the blank wall across the room.

Then, he saw it.

At first, it was subtle—a ripple in the space between him and the wall. Not quite movement, but not stillness either. He leaned forward, eyes narrowing.

The air wasn’t empty.

It looked... thick. Dense. As if space itself carried substance, filling the room with something unseen yet undeniably present.

The longer he stared, the more it came into focus. Tiny pockets, like smoke trapped in water, curled and dissolved in slow, deliberate patterns.

It was fascinating. They weren’t random. They moved with purpose, coiling and shifting, almost... alive.

The light from the street outside flickered, deepening the shadows. He thought he could see something impossible —the opposite of matter. Something
