Chapter 9
The next few days passed in a haze of routine. Lucien woke to the familiar beeping of his alarm, dragged himself through his morning rituals, and walked the orderly streets to the Bureau. Every step fell in sync with the world around him, perfectly timed, perfectly aligned.
On the surface, nothing had changed. He worked the same hours, greeted the same faces, and returned to the same apartment every evening. But beneath it all, he felt... fractured.
The rhythmic ebb and flow of the city, once a soothing backdrop to his life, now grated against his nerves. The hum of the servers pressed against his skull like an itch he couldn’t scratch, and the neatly scrolling data on his display seemed to twist and blur when he stared too long. He found himself rubbing his temples more often, blinking away a persistent haze that clung to his thoughts.
Even his usual conversations with Darius and the others felt hollow —like watching a play he’d seen too many times, their laughter echoing in his ears without meaning. Why does everything feel... smaller?
At night, he lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, the glow of the city filtering through the blinds in precise, measured slats. Sleep refused to come, and when it did, it brought with it strange, fragmented dreams—flashes of light, swirling patterns, Lyra ’s voice murmuring in the dark.
The object she had given him sat on his bedside table, untouched but impossible to ignore. He avoided looking at it directly, but his eyes would catch its shape in the light, a black silhouette against the sterile white of his apartment. A whisper at the edge of his awareness that wouldn’t fade.
