STARLIGHT UNBOUND
vivid. Too vivid. He could see every detail—the fine lines around their mouths, the perfect symmetry of their features—but worse than the faces were the whispers.
At first, they were faint. Then louder. Fragmented voices slipping through the cracks of his mind—
"I need to get home by six."
"She said she ’d call, but she won’t."
"Harmony is all that matters."
The whispers overlapped, chaotic and nonsensical, like he was tuning into the city's hidden frequencies—hundreds of voices bleeding through at once, fragments of thoughts and transmissions layered over each other in ceaseless static. As he blinked, the air shimmered with faint images—faces, numbers, bursts of color—blinking in and out of existence like signals struggling to hold their shape.
"What is this? What’s happening to me?"
He pressed the heels of his hands into his eyes, trying to block out the noise, but it was inside him now—alive, crackling through his nerves like fire.
Beneath the overstimulation, something stirred—deep, ancient, and undeniable.
It burned inside him, low and steady, spreading across his entire body, coiling through his head like a living pulse. Terrifying, exhilarating. It had always been there, waiting.
For the first time in his life, Lucien felt alive. Truly alive. More than the city, more than the system, more than himself.
He slowed his steps, blinking rapidly, forcing himself to take in the streets through new eyes. Everything was connected.
The glint of light bouncing off a distant window.
The rhythmic click of shoes against the pavement, each step falling into perfect synchrony.
The distant drilling of a drone installing a sign, its steady whir vibrating through the earth beneath his feet.
The patterns were everywhere.
Lucien drifted through the streets like a ghost—separate from the world yet intrinsically connected to everything around him. His hands clenched in his coat pockets, fingers shaking, and his thumb pressed hard against the black disk.
“What is this? What is happening to me?”
