Chapter 22

The sector had transformed in the days since power had been restored. Halls that once echoed with emptiness now pulsed with movement, their cold metal walls softened by the warmth of human presence. The first apartments—on the upper floors of the old civic block—were finally occupied. “Habitable” was a generous term; the pipes groaned, the floors slanted, and the furniture was a mismatched collection of scavenged pieces. But for the people who had found refuge here —families, drifters, and those the world had forgotten—these rooms might as well have been palaces.

Outside, the central plaza bore its own signs of change. The skeletal remains of long-dry fountains now trickled with fresh water, repaired through the combined efforts of Harun, Aarik, and a few reprogrammed maintenance bots. Roads once swallowed by weeds were slowly being cleared, jagged cracks patched over. Even the air smelled different—not clean, not yet, but no longer stagnant.

A rhythm was beginning to take shape among the citizens, the early uncertainty giving way to cautious hope. Much of that was thanks to Leona, who had taken charge of organizing work teams, assigning people based on their skills. Some cleared debris from abandoned apartment blocks, others worked in what would soon be the market district, laying the groundwork for a proper food exchange.

"People need to see this as more than a shelter," she had said that morning, standing with Lucien and Lyra in the shade of a half-repaired awning. "They need to believe it can be a home."
