Lyra ’s voice was razor-sharp. “And what do you think the system is doing now? People aren’t free—they’re prisoners. You call it stability, but it’s a cage.”

Caidan’s jaw tightened. “Choice is a luxury this world cannot afford. AstroSYS ensures survival. If people are left to their own devices, they will destroy themselves. We ’ve seen it before.”

Lucien finally spoke, his voice quiet but firm. “And what if the system is the thing holding them back? What if it’s why we’ve stopped evolving?”

Caidan’s snapped to him. “You’re the technician, aren’t you? The one who defected from the Bureau.”

He didn’t flinch. “I’ve seen how AstroSYS works. I know what it’s hiding. The system isn’t protecting people—it’s controlling them.”

Silence set in like the surface of a flat pond, waiting to be broken.

Caidan’s brows lifted, surprised. “You’re asking me to dismantle the foundation of our society. ”

Corin scoffed. “We’re asking you to let people live without AstroSYS breathing down their necks. Not that complicated.”

Caidan’s glanced at the Stewards beside him, then back to the rebels. “And you believe an autonomous sector will solve everything? That people will suddenly know how to govern themselves? ”

Lyra ’s tone was calm, unwavering. “We believe people deserve the chance to try. You talk about survival —but survival without freedom isn’t living. It’s existing. If AstroSYS is as strong as you say, the rest of the city will stay intact. Give us the sector, and we’ll prove you wrong.”

Caidan was silent.

Then, finally —he nodded.

Slow. Reluctant.

“I can’t make promises. The Council won’t agree easily. But I’ll bring your demand to them.”

Corin folded his arms. “And how do we know you’re not stalling?”
