She didn ’t care how vast or strange or impossible this task of his was. She didn’t care if it was something she couldn’t fully understand. She would fight to keep him here, grounded, tethered to reality. He doesn ’t realize it, but he needs me as much as I need him.
The conviction settled over her, scary but steadying. She wouldn ’t let him face whatever this was alone. Even if she didn ’t know how to help him yet, she would find a way.
Her hand landed on his as she turned onto her side, her eyes closing.
Lucien ’s breathing remained steady, even, but there was something about the sound that still felt restless to her. As though even in sleep, some part of him was still searching, working even, somehow.
Lyra forced her own breaths to match his rhythm. Tomorrow. We ’ll figure it out tomorrow.
