Chapter 11
Milly heard a faint knock on her door. She put something on fast and
hurried to the door wondering who it was.
- Hey Miss, sorry to barge in but we need to talk, and Roman let himself in and took a seat.
- Hi Roman, she said clearly annoyed. But as she realized she might still need his services she decided to be nice. What seems to be the problem?- Wrong question. Not what but who is more appropriate. Your brother John. We bumped into each other at the pub and he started asking questions. You might want to be careful with him. He is not as dumb as he seems, that is all.
- So you came to warn me? Or are you afraid for yourself? You said nobody would suspect anything.
- Nobody did. But then John …
- Enough! Milly yelled losing her temper. My younger brother had better mind his own business. I'll make sure that he does. Now go, I don't need your services for the time being.
Roman left her all alone in the cold morning air that filled the room to figure out what was to be done next. At least he had done his job, he had warned her. Now it was up to her.
Milly decided to pay her brother a visit and see what he knew. But she would have to be careful not to disclose any information by mistake. That would be a blunder. So as soon as Roman left her room she paid John a visit. She went slowly towards the end of the corridor where John's room was. When she got in front of his door, just as she was about to knock she thought she heard noises coming from the inside. She made sure the corridor was empty and nobody would see her and then she put her ear against the door and listened. She could clearly hear her brother's voice and he seemed in pain. Then in a flash a thought came to her mind: what if Roman had decided to get rid of her brother? Yeah, she wanted the throne but she didn’t want to kill her brother. Maybe exile him on some far away island but not kill him. Never! So next thing she knew she pushed the door

wide open ready to save her brother from the grasp of death which Roman had surely intended for him… but she fell on the slippery floor just to see John looking at her embarrassed from the covers of his bed half naked. And then a swarthy brunette popped her head from under the covers with wide scared eyes looking at him and then at her.
- Uh, John babbled while looking at his sister who was slowly getting up from the floor, what is the meaning of this? What are you doing here?- Oh, she said blushing while eying the brunette, sorry, I thought … never mind, we can have this talk some other time as this obviously isn't the right moment!
- Obviously! He said and pointed his index towards the same door she had come in through. Or you want me to show you out? As you can see, I am not properly dressed…
- No, no, don't bother, she said in a hurry as she didn’t want to see her brother naked, I’ll let myself out. And Milly left in a hurry with her cheeks still red and hot. As soon as she was out that door she was sorry she had gone there in the first place. What will John think now? She never visited him unless it was something important. What if he will realize her involvement with Roman and the counsellors' deaths? The evening had just turned from bad to worse.
