CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Captain Cole and his four-person team stood ready at the entrance to a dark service tunnel deep in the bunker. Their gear was a strange mix of future and past. They wore lightweight, modern body armor and carried advanced survival packs with water purifiers and nutrient paste. But all their navigational tools were ancient and non-electronic: a simple magnetic compass, a sextant for stellar navigation, and meticulously printed paper maps. They were ghosts of a new age, relying on the tools of an old one.

Their journey would be long and perilous. They could not use any aircraft, as the Xylan fleet controlled the skies. Instead, they would use a series of shielded, forgotten subway tunnels to exit the capital city's security zone. Once in the wilderness, they would travel on foot or by using any old, purely mechanical vehicles they could find and repair. Their thousands-of-miles journey would be a true test of skill and endurance.

General Thorne and Dr. Lena saw the team off in the silent, echoing tunnel. There were no grand speeches or salutes. The moment was too heavy for that. The fate of their world was being placed on the shoulders of these five soldiers. "The hopes of every person on this planet go with you," General Thorne said, her voice quiet but firm. "Make us proud." With a final nod, Captain Cole and his team disappeared into the darkness.

Back in the command center, General Thorne immediately turned her attention to the second half of the plan: preparing the world to receive the weapons. While Cole’s team was on their mission, her team had the equally daunting task of building a global resistance from scratch, in secret. They had to create a new communication network, one the Xylans could not detect.

The new network was a return to basics. It relied on a web of hidden shortwave radio operators, broadcasting messages coded with an old, unbreakable cipher from a past war. For the most sensitive information, they used human couriers, a method that was slow and dangerous, but completely invisible to the Xylans’ electronic surveillance. Through this budding network, they began to identify potential leaders for resistance cells in cities across the world.

Thorne also tasked a team with creating simple training materials. Using basic animation, they created short instructional videos on how to safely handle, disassemble, clean, and fire an AK-47. The plan was to convert this information into a format that could be broadcast over the radio, as a series of tones and beeps that a simple computer could translate back into images. The training program for their new army was being built before they even had the weapons.

The "unlikely arsenal" of the plan was about more than just the guns themselves. The other, more important part of the arsenal was the people. General Thorne's staff began creating lists of citizens who could become key figures in the resistance. They looked for not only former soldiers, but for mechanics, electricians, doctors, and community organizers—people with practical skills who could lead and support a rebellion.

The Xylans, in their arrogance, were inadvertently helping the human cause. They paid little attention to the daily lives of the human population, whom they viewed as a defeated and irrelevant species. They were focused on stripping the planet of its resources and establishing their own infrastructure. This neglect provided the perfect shadow in which the seeds of resistance could be planted and allowed to grow.

The sheer ambition of the plan was staggering. They were attempting to build a secret, global army from nothing, coordinate it with century-old technology, and arm it with weapons from a museum, all while being occupied by a technologically superior alien race. Every single step of the plan was fraught with risk and the potential for complete failure.

But as Captain Cole’s team silently made their way through the ruins of the world above, the plan was set in motion below. Two parallel efforts, one small and kinetic, the other vast and patient, were working toward a single goal. The unlikely arsenal of old steel and the unbreakable spirit of ordinary people was slowly being prepared. The world did not know it yet, but its secret army was beginning to form.
