CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

General Thorne stood before her senior staff in the command bunker. On the holographic display were the faces of the few regional commanders she had managed to contact over the sputtering military radio network. With a grim and resolute expression, she announced the new reality. "As of this moment," she said, her voice echoing in the tense silence, "all of our existing war plans are obsolete. Everything we know about 21st-century warfare is to be discarded."

She explained the harsh logic of their situation. The Xylans’ greatest strengths were their superior technology, their control of the orbital space, and their mastery of the electronic spectrum. To continue trying to fight them with network-dependent weapons would be to play a game they were guaranteed to lose. "They expect us to fight them with smart weapons and drones," she stated. "So, we will fight them with gunpowder and steel."

The radical idea was met with stunned silence, and then some resistance. A battle-hardened commander from the European sector finally spoke up, his voice crackling over the radio. "General, with all due respect, how can you expect our people to fight aliens with museum pieces? A 180-year-old rifle against their energy weapons? It sounds like a recipe for a massacre."

In response, General Thorne projected an image of a sleek, modern smart rifle next to a simple, wood-and-steel AK-47. The smart rifle's icon was red, indicating it was offline and useless. The AK-47 was purely mechanical, always ready. "The best weapon is the one that fires," Thorne said simply. "The Kalashnikov is immune to an EMP. It cannot be hacked. Its ammunition cannot be disabled by a remote signal. It is a dumb weapon, and that is now its greatest strength."

The young historian was asked to elaborate on the new strategy. He explained that this was a return to an old form of warfare, one based on insurgency. The goal was not to meet the Xylan army in an open field for a decisive battle; that would be suicide. The goal was to harass, to disrupt, and to bleed the occupying force, day by day. It was to make their control of Earth so costly and so painful that their will to stay would eventually be broken.

This "old idea" represented a complete shift in military thinking. The new human army would not wear uniforms or march in formation. It would be a decentralized network of small, independent resistance cells, spread across every continent. Factory workers, farmers, teachers, office clerks—every citizen was now a potential soldier. The battlefield was no longer a designated zone; it was every city street, every quiet suburb, every dense forest.

Dr. Lena provided the crucial psychological context. "The warrior Xylans are arrogant in their power," she explained. "They think logically and strategically. They will see unarmed civilians as irrelevant, a population to be managed, not a threat to be eliminated. They will not expect a lethal attack to come from a shopkeeper or a librarian. The element of surprise will be our most powerful weapon in the beginning."

The mission to the museum was now seen in a new light. The goal was not just to grab some old guns. The primary objective was to secure the technical specifications, the blueprints for the AK-47 and its ammunition. According to the museum’s inventory, the deep storage vaults also held old-fashioned, purely mechanical manufacturing equipment. If the team could get the museum's independent power grid online, they could turn the forgotten archive into a factory for the resistance.

A grim but determined acceptance settled over the leaders in the bunker. They were choosing a path that would be brutal, bloody, and long. The cost in human lives would be staggering. But it was a path that allowed them to fight back. It was a chance, and a chance was infinitely better than the silent, passive surrender they were currently facing.

The "old idea" was officially adopted as the foundation for the new global strategy: Operation Freedom. The focus of the entire war effort now narrowed to a single point. General Thorne began the process of selecting a small, elite team for the perilous journey to the Museum of 2024. The future of the human race now rested on their ability to resurrect a forgotten idea from a history book.
