66 AN ULTRA VIOLENT FAIRY TALE

Kickswitch came to the road that was closer to a hiking trail and took out her flash light since the street lights ended there. She walked easily among the trees and their rich fragrance. Soon she heard the sound of chickens clucking and saw a growing orange firelight up ahead.

She came out from a cluster of spruce and pine trees and stopped at the green sign that read, ‘Row House Village’ in blocky white letters. All four of them were down there on lawn chairs, quiet and still.

Lenny fit the definition of melancholy with a deep frown on his face as he sat looking at the fire with glassy eyes. Then he looked up the hill and saw Kickswitch and stood up with a grin and hearty cry.

The others looked at him confused until they followed his gaze. As she came down the hill the four of them came rushing to her with arms out and smiles and for just a split second, Kickswitch saw them all glow. It was a flicker, there and gone in half the time it takes to blink, but she knew what she saw. And when they reached her and gave her a group hug, that glow was there again but she was too busy basking in the love of friendship to worry about it very much.
