But there is one thing she has never forgotten.
A sound.
A hum in the woods when she was ten. Barely a breath of noise. Gone almost before she heard it.
Her father dismissed it. Her mother said it was nothing. Her siblings forgot it within days.
But Mary didn't.
Not because it frightened her. Because it felt ..... out of place.
The Amish live by patterns; seasons, chores, hymns, the turning of the year. This sound fit none of them.
It lodged in her memory like a burr in wool.
