Chloe arrived with a gift of herbal tea in a paper bag and a small bunch of wildflowers – a thoughtful gesture that warmed Maia's heart. They hugged at the door for longer than usual, as if testing whether their friendship still worked after everything that had changed.
"Thank you, for all of this," Chloe murmured into Maia's shoulder.
"Thank you for coming," Maia replied, and meant it.
They gathered around the low coffee table in the living room, holding steaming mugs of tea. "Can I make a suggestion?" Maia asked. "Before we discuss anything practical, can we do a quick heart-share? Just one hope and one fear each. No advice, no commentary. Just listening."
Chloe nodded. Mark reached for Maia's hand.
"Me first," Chloe said, surprising them both. "My hope is that we can find ease together. That this doesn't have to feel like a therapy session. My fear is that I'll accidentally cause tension between you two. That's the last thing I want."
Mark squeezed Maia's hand, then spoke. "I hope you both feel seen tonight. Truly seen. And I'm afraid of saying the wrong thing and unintentionally hurting someone."
Maia looked from Chloe to Mark, then down at her hands, which were wrapped around the warm ceramic. "My hope is that I can feel joy tonight," she said quietly. "Not just intellectual agreement that this is okay. Real, inner happiness for you two." She paused. "My fear is that my jealousy will make me feel like an outsider in my own home or even in my own heart."
The weight of the confession was palpable. Chloe reached across the table and took Maia's hand in hers.
"Thank you for saying that," said Chloe. "That's brave."
Maia nodded, struggling to speak.
The silence that followed was not uncomfortable. But it was the kind of quiet that allows something new to be born. Maia felt an impulse rising.
"I have an idea," she said slowly. "It might sound strange."
"Try us," Mark said.
She looked at Chloe. "Would you be open to doing a hugging meditation with Mark? Here? Now?"
Chloe's eyes widened. "With you here?"
She explained her vision. Mark and Chloe would sit in yab yum – Chloe in his lap with her legs wrapped around his waist and their bodies close together. Maia would sit sideways, placing one hand on Mark's back at his heart centre, and the other on Chloe's heart centre on her back. They would all breathe through their hearts together. No talking, no caressing, just presence.
Chloe looked at Mark. He looked at Maia.
"I'm willing if you are," Mark said to Chloe.
"Let's try," Chloe replied.
They placed one of the large, sturdy sofa cushions on the floor for Mark to sit on. Chloe climbed into his lap, her legs finding their way around his waist and her arms looping around his neck. Mark held her, his hands around her lower body. They rested their heads on each other's shoulders.
Maia knelt beside them, her knees pressing into the soft wool of the rug. She placed her left hand on Mark's upper back, feeling the warmth of his body through his shirt. Her right hand reached around to rest on Chloe's back, just below her shoulder blade.
"Close your eyes," Maia guided them. "Breathe through your heart centres. Imagine your breath and your LOVE naturally moving in and out of your chest."
They followed her lead. She could feel their subtle breathing movements beneath her palms, and a gentle synchrony began to emerge.
After a minute of this, Maia's voice came again, quieter this time. "Would you both be willing to take off your tops? Skin to skin? I want to feel the full warmth of your connection inside me."
There was a pause. Then the soft rustle of fabric. Mark pulled his shirt over his head. Chloe unbuttoned hers and let it fall. Their bare upper bodies pressed together, and Maia could feel their soft skin beneath her hands.
She closed her eyes and breathed LOVE in and out through her heart centre.
For a long time, nothing happened. And at the same time, a lot was happening.
Maia felt the heat radiating from both bodies: the deep steadiness of Mark's spine and the slight tremor in Chloe's back. Was it excitement? She felt her heart centre glowing: there was Luma – she recognized it now. But there was also that stirring in her stomach. Envy?
She didn't push it away. She had learned that much. She let the jealousy sit beside the warmth in her chest – two visitors sharing the same space inside her body. I'm afraid I'm becoming invisible. But I also feel this beautiful, tender expansion. Both feelings are true.
Beneath her hands, the breathing deepened. Chloe's body softened, melting deeper into Mark's embrace. Maia felt a quiet sob travel up Chloe's spine – a soft release and surrender.
"I feel it," Maia whispered, almost to herself. "Your joy. It's right here, under my hands."
Chloe began to cry. Maia could tell it wasn't from sadness but from the overwhelming sensation of being held by two dear friends at once. Mark kissed her neck, pressing his lips slowly and deliberately against her skin.
Maia kept her hands where they were. She breathed with them, allowing the jealousy, warmth, tears and silence to exist together.
After a while, the edges began to blur. She was fully aware of herself and her own body, yet she also felt like all three of them. A blissful feeling of oneness washed over her, expanding her sense of being. Focusing on that unity filled her with a deeply nourishing sense of completeness.
Ten minutes passed. Maybe twenty. Time was not important any more.
When they finally opened their eyes and began to move their bodies, Chloe found Maia's hand behind Mark's back and held it for a moment.
"Thank you," Chloe breathed. "I've never been held like that by two people at once before. It felt like ... I was supported, loved, and deeply cared for."
Maia exhaled, a long, satisfied release. "Something shifted in me too. I felt ... complete. Like I wasn't just watching from the outside. I felt one with both of you."
They put their shirts back on. Chloe wrapped herself in a wooly blanket and they cuddled together on the sofa. The atmosphere was completely different now, softer and more intimate, but not in a romantic way. They felt fully human.
Chloe pulled her knees up to her chest, cocooned in the blanket. "Can I say something?"
"Please," Maia said.
"I've been single for a long time. Not because I necessarily wanted to be. It's just that I was afraid of ending up in something that would make me feel small again." She glanced at Mark, then back at Maia. "What you two are building here ... it's the opposite of small. It's both scary and beautiful, and I don't fully understand it yet. But when we sat so close together and breathed through our hearts, I felt something I hadn't experienced with others in years."
"What's that?" Mark asked.
"Nobody wanted anything from me, let alone take possession of me. I felt safe and cherished with you."
The words landed like a stone in still water, rippling outward. Maia could still feel her jealousy humming in the background, but it had eased slightly. It was as if the hard edges had been smoothened by the honesty between them.
"I felt a bit jealous," Maia admitted. "While you two were holding each other. There was this whirl in my stomach, this little voice saying, 'They have something you're not part of.'" She paused, pressing her palm to her chest. "But I also felt really warm and expansive. Both feelings were happening at the same time. I didn't know that was possible."
Mark reached for her other hand. "How does that feel? Knowing that they can both be present?"
"Strange," said Maia. "But also ... deeply liberating. Like I don't have to overcome my jealousy before I'm allowed to feel joy for you."
Chloe nodded slowly. "Beautiful. You are making room for both."
They sat with that for a while, letting it breathe. Then Mark sat up straight. "We should also talk about practical things," he said. "Because the mood won't last if we don't have a framework for it."
Chloe laughed. "Now you sound like a therapist!"
Maia smiled. "But he's right. Good feelings need good grounding."
They spent the next hour carefully discussing the logistics, because they all wanted the arrangement to work. They talked about check-ins and daily heart-sharing, as well as organisational matters like using the Planning Pause and asking if there were any scheduling conflicts.
They also talked about privacy and transparency. Mark and Chloe could enjoy time alone together without having to report every little detail. However, significant happenings would be shared with Maia as soon as possible.
Then there was the bigger vision for the network. Chloe suggested a larger group meeting with Layla, Pascal and Dorian. "I want to understand our whole ecosystem," she said. By the way, what's happening with Dorian and you anyway, Maia? Any news there?"
Maia felt a small flutter in her stomach. She hadn't been hiding anything, exactly. But there were layers, and she hadn't revealed them all yet.
"We had a deeper meditation last week," she said carefully. "We took our clothes off, but he kept his underwear on. It was a deliberate boundary – his idea, actually. He wanted us to feel each other fully, but without risking going further." She paused, remembering the warmth of his body against hers and the vulnerability of being fully seen. "It was thrilling. After some minutes, he started to vibrate subtly. It was also peaceful. Like my body was saying yes to something my mind hadn't even begun to process yet."
She glanced at Mark, studying his face. There was a quick flicker of surprise, but no defensiveness. No cold retreat.
"That sounds intense," he said quietly.
"It was," Maia admitted. "But it didn't feel like a secret from you. It was more like a discovery about myself. I was going to tell you, at the right moment. But now I've learned that we should do this sooner rather than later."
Mark reached over and took her hand. "This feels like the right moment."
She squeezed his hand back, grateful for his assurance. Chloe watched them both.
"You two are really doing this, aren't you?" Chloe said. "The honesty thing. Not just talking about it."
"We're trying," Maia said.
It was time for Chloe to leave. After a seemingly endless round of hugs at the door, Maia and Mark stood in the hallway, listening to her footsteps fading down the stairs.
"I'm proud of you," Mark said.
"Don't," Maia said. "Don't make this about me being heroic. I was jealous. I still am. It's just ... quieter now."
"That's exactly why I'm proud of you."
She leaned into him and they kissed long and compassionately. They stood there like that for a long moment, savouring their bond.
Later, Mark sat at the kitchen table with his notebook open in front of him. The memory of the evening was still warming his heart and his whole body tingled from the shared energies. How beautiful it was to feel us three together! He picked up his pen and began to write.
