Chapter Six

 

I have been in love a couple of times, but I have never been drowned by my emotions. I know when to stop knocking. I began to forget about Lizzy. As for me love has always been the motivation. I shared the account with Sauce, Kelvin and Tayo. I was amazed that they didn’t scold me like they would. They did point out my mistakes, but also helped me realize I dealt with the situation fairly enough. Sauce told me,

“I think you should take some positives from this. She is God sent; a lesson. He sends some people our way to just tilt us in the right direction. She is a blessing in disguise. If your paths ever cross again, show her some love. We don’t hate bruv, we are better than that.” He trashed me in FIFA 15 afterwards.

When I was younger my dad would say to me, “your present is always good enough until your future comes along.” I took a break from the norm. I travelled to Lagos for some fresh inspiration. I stayed with a big brother. Before then he had requested for my professionalism in developing a proposal and business plan for an intending blog. He returned from work one day to inform me that I would be presenting the proposal the next day. It was impromptu but I knew I had to deliver. On the day of the meeting I met with two people; a man old enough to be my father and a lady, apparently in her late-twenties. The CEO and the manager. The meeting commenced and I delivered my points astutely. I returned home after the meeting, trusting God for a positive outcome. Two days later, the sound of my ringtone alarmed me from my sleep. I was reluctant to pick at first, but then I noticed that it was an unknown number and that prompted me to pick. For all I care, someone could be calling to ask for my account details.

“Hello.” I answered as I managed to yawn silently.

“Hi.” The feminine voice replied and then went ahead to ask “Is this Mr. Victor?”

Yes. Please who am I speaking with?” I asked politely,

“My name is Beth. You were at our ofce to present your proposal for our blog two days ago.” Sleep fled and I quickly sat up. “Oh, I remember. When do you want me to begin?” I asked with total optimism. I heard her chuckle. She stated, “I am actually calling to schedule another meeting with you.”

“Okay…”

“Can we meet later in the evening?” she asked.

I replied in the afrmative. She went ahead to give me the details of where and when. I planned to arrive thirty minutes early so as to settle down before their arrival, but she was already there when I arrived.

“You are a little early” I commented.

“Yes” she smiled. I realized it was just the two of us so I enquired about her boss.

“He is actually my dad. I work for him. He won’t be joining us” she explained. She went ahead and ordered pizza. She came back minutes later and announced,

“We gave the job to someone else.” I gawked at her in amazement. Why did she invite me over? I was annoyed. Nonetheless, I kept my calm. I simply folded my arms, speechlessly.

She continued, “I went through your profile and I stumbled on your blog address.” In my mind I was like, “and so what?” I was so irritated. Probably because I thought I nailed my presentation and deserved the job. Consciously, I asked her, “sorry to interrupt you. Beth is short for?”

“Elizabeth” she answered. I smiled sheepishly. It brought back memories of Lizzy. There was no semblance in their character, not any that I noticed at that point. I thought
