ABIDING IN HIS DIVINE SHADOW

The psalmist eloquently penned in Psalm 91:1, “He that dwelleth in

the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

“Secret” here is from a word that means “sheltered, covered, concealed.” In Bible times, a place of shelter, refuge from storms, and protection from adversaries was most important. It still is!

A shadow is not the reality, but an image of a reality cast by certain degrees and brilliance of light. However, the shadow cannot but remain true to its substance. There may be realities in the substance that is not clearly seen in the shadow, but there will never be anything in a shadow that is not first in the substance from which it is cast. Thus do the saints of God enjoy the blessedness of abiding in the shadow of the Almighty, as James 1:17 puts it, “...the Father of lights with whom there is no variableness nor shadow of turning.” We do not see as clearly as we would like, but when we see Him we shall be like him. There will be no surprised changes because the shadow is true to its substance. God’s Word is that shadow of the Almighty. Are you actively striving to live in that shadow?

FOR THOUGHT: Do you think that life in heaven will be based on something different to the truth of which the church is the foundation and pillar of presently? This is the secret place hidden away from Old Testament saints, to be revealed in the last time. If it is pleasant to be in church assembly, and to know the tenants of the faith, it will be so much better in the eternal realm because what is reality now is actually a shadow of that which is to come.
