THE LOVE OF GOD: INFINITE, BUT LIMITED
The title seems to be a contradiction of terms, but it is true. Think with me about it.
George Beverly Shea recorded some amazing songs. His baritone voice sent the well-chosen words to ears and hearts across America and around the world. His: I’d Rather Have Jesus” is a beloved, classical favorite in the Christian world, but none rose to the level of “The Love of God.” The lyrics include the lines: “The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell. It goes beyond the farthest star, and reaches to the lowest hell.” In words that challenge the imagination, the song goes on to include, “Could we with ink the oceans fill, and were the skies of parchment made: were every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade; to write the love of God above would drain the oceans dry, nor could the scroll contain the whole though stretched from sky to sky.”
How great is that unsearchable love of God? When the human mind has reached the limits even of its imagination, the love of God stretches on and on, light years into infinity, and we can but marvel and rejoice! By it, and it alone are the condemned offspring of Adam, saved by His marvelous grace, from the cesspools of sin and a certain future in hell.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16. In I John 4:10 it is written, “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” What greater love could ever be expressed than that the very creator God of the universe should love His creation so much that He would affix His own eternal state to it by becoming one of us. As a human, He simply did what no one of us could ever do! You are one, only one of billions of human units to be admitted to the banquet of life, yet God knows you. He made you. You exist by His will. How He loves you! How can anyone not properly respond to such love? Yet, some do. But let it be understood that should you trample under your feet the precious blood of the Son of God to go out of this world without making peace with Him; you will have found the end of His love. He will never forgive you! Please, do not do that!
FOR THOUGHT: Have you fallen into the sinful, human trap of making God in your mind to be as a man? Since He is far from it, what do you think will happen to those who flippantly deal with the idea of God when it is theirs to stand before Him? Can there be any other criteria than His Word by which one may enjoy a right relationship with God? What? What?
