PSALM 90:1-6: A PRAYER OF MOSES

“1Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. 3 Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men. 4 For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. 5 Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up. 6 In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth.”

WORD STUDY

Verse One: “Dwelling place” is in Hebrew “Ma’own,” a den, a habitation (the meaning of “Home!”).

Verse Two: “Brought forth” is “Yeledh,” which is a work denoting a birthing. “Formed” is “Tacholel,” a word used widely and carrying various translations, but many of them meaning pain as in association with labor pains.

Verse Three: “Destruction” is”dakka” meaning “Humility or contrition” The word is found in only three places: here, in Psalm 34:18, and in Isaiah 57:15.

Verse Four: “Yesterday” is “Ethmol” which means “Near-by” as in a day near-by.

Verse Five: “Zaram” “To pour out (as in a flood). It requires a complete phrase in translation: “Thou carriest them away as with a flood.” The word occurs only here and in Psalm 77:17 Verse Six: “Flourisheth” is “Tsuts,” “Shine, sparkle, blossom.” “ Cut down” is “Mul” meaning “Circumcised.” “Witherith” is “Yabesh” to be dried up, without moisture.

in all generations.

2 Before the mountains were brought forth, (birthed from you) or ever thou had formed (travailed in producing) the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. 3 You turn man to destruction; (the common humility of death) and say, (by this you shall) Return, ye children of men. 4 For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday (a near-by day) when it is past, and as a watch in the night. 5 You carry them away as (poured out) with a flood; they are as asleep: in the morning they are like grass which grows up. 6 In the morning it
