NOTES ON THE SECOND PSALM

1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of

the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the L 3 ORD , and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. 4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the LORD shall have them in derision. 5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. 6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. 7 I will declare the decree: the L 8 ORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. 9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. 10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

WORD STUDY

In verse one, “rage” is in Hebrew “Raqshu” meaning to assemble in a tumultuous sense. Turmoil is the end result of life pursuits minus God. “Imagine” is translated from Hebrew “Higgah” meaning to mumble. To talk about; the course or theme of discussion regarding the way forward. “A vain thing” is from the Hebrew word, “Rig,” meaning emptiness. It designates that which comes to nothing.

In verse two “LORD” is “Yahweh,” or “Jehovah” which is the messianic Jesus; thus His anointed would be His church for it is anointed, and the two have no other but the same message, the same truth to bear.

In verse three, “Bands” is from the Hebrew “Moceroth,” meaning restraints, parental restraints or religious instructions of life, here, from God and His church. Also in verse three, “Cords” is “Aloth” which means cords or connections of servitude.

These verses speak of the way of the ungodly nations of earth which God soundly rebukes. Their persistence in such will bring mocking laughter from God as He vexes them in His fierce anger.

The psalm closes with appeals from the Holy Spirit to men of all nations to kiss the son, that is, to get in the right relationship with Him while time and opportunity prevails in the remaining time of the age
