THINKING OF MOTHER

“When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.” 2 Timothy 1:5

Thoughts of my long departed mother bring broad smiles and warm, lovely feelings. I am thankful for a Christian mother. She was not without sin as none are, but she had a strong value system of right and wrong, and held the Lord, the Bible, and the people of God in high esteem. I would love to tell her again how much she means to me even now as an older man.

Oh, I would also like to thank her one more time for her prayers, singing hymns to me in infancy, and for the bible story booklets she bought for me one Christmas from the Jewel Tea man. I hope your memories of your mother are sweet whether your mother is alive, or if she has gone to be with the Lord. While the nation pauses to honor mothers on this one day, I am firmly convinced that the greatest honor anyone gives to mother is living a Christian life everyday, extending a helping hand to others along life’s way.

A friend of mine relates a story of a precious mother who had been very ill for some time.

One day, she had to reprimand her daughter for some misconduct. Instead of accepting the rebuke, the girl began to fume inwardly. She did not speak to her mother that day. As she started to go to her room that evening, she heard her mother calling, “Wil you please bring me a drink of water, dear?” The girl silently and sullenly closed the door of her room without complying with her mother’s simple request. Soon she fell asleep.

With the coming of dawn, her anger had subsided. “I must go now and tell mother how sorry I am for my unlovely attitude!” Softly she tapped on her mother’s door. But the usual

“Come in, dear” was not heard! The girl pushed open the door and rushed to her mother’s side.

But instead of seeing the usual warm, friendly smile, she saw her mother’s features set in the cold stare of death. Broken heartedly, the girl sobbed, “Oh, mother I didn’t intend to hurt you! I love you! I love you! Please forgive me for being so mean!” But the loving lips could no longer speak words of pardon. The memory of that incident so greatly troubled her for many years.

May God help all reading these lines to treat their mothers with the love and respect which will remove regrets when mother is gone. Paul paid tribute to Eunice and Lois the mother and grandmother of Timothy for teaching him God’s Word. 2 Tim. 1:5. Their faith netted them eternal honor, as will be true of all who follow the Lord FOR THOUGHT: None of my mother’s children ever doubted her love for each of them. Did you have such a mother? How do you want the mother of your children to be remembered?
