Introduction:
I.
The Destruction of Jerusalem (1:1-22)
A.
Chapter one is often referred to as the First Dirge or funeral poem.
1.
It is a vivid and dramatic description of the desolation of Jerusalem and her misery because of her sin.
2.
Chapter one is presented through the voice of the prophet and as though Jerusalem is a personified city lamenting her personal desolation.
3.
The descriptions are described as being both physical and covenantal.
a.
Her desolation is because of the sin of the people and of her spiritual leaders; but throughout the descriptions are repeated calls for Yahweh to deliver them, 1:1-22.
b.
Though their desolation carries with it the thought of hopelessness; God non-the-less honors His promise to forgive and restore.
B.
The Lament of the Prophet. (1:1-11) This is the Prophet’s Description of the Desolate City. Jeremiah laments the fall of Jerusalem from a position of prominence to one of servitude and covenant cursing. He yet pleads for Yahweh’s deliverance, 1:1-11.
