How consciousness arises is a question for which no clear answer has yet been found. In my book The Argument from Causality, in the section on the soul, I discuss consciousness in order to explain why such a phenomenon need not necessarily be accounted for by assuming that consciousness is non-material, and why we need not rule out the possibility that consciousness is material.
