Declarative memory is the type of memory that we consciously recall and can describe, such as things we have done during the day or the names of objects and people. In contrast, there is procedural memory, which we do not consciously recall and usually cannot easily describe in words; such as the skills involved in riding a bicycle, driving, walking, playing sports, or using a spoon and fork. Although these skills are stored in our memory, we cannot easily explain how to perform them verbally.
