The Poet Explains Certain Poems of His

 

 

When he first starts talking to you,

there's something odd about his speech

 that teases you.  Who needs it?

you keep saying to yourself.

Besides, he's tricky,

always seems to be telling you two things,

maybe more, like someone talking

to himself. Still, you know he's not just

chewing gum. He has that spare,

eccentric eye. That urgency.

That sudden way of offering you

his tiny, dark bouquets of flowers.
