Try to draw an apple,

get a pear.

Try to draw a pear;

get an apple.

I’ve tried it backways too;

drew a pear

in the hope of getting an apple:

got a quince.

If outer appearance

so defies,

what chance have I

of flavor and flesh?

Will I ever be able to draw

an apple apple,

a pear pear;

get flesh and flavor

as apple and pear really are?
