VIGIL FOR A

 PASSIONATE

MOCKINGBIRD

Once, long ago,

on a warm June night

a mockingbird

sang its passionate song.

The intricate patterns

of its voice

blended with the perfumes

of jasmine and magnolia.

All night long

I listened

as it sent its ecstasy

to mingle with mine.

Now, each June,

I wait for

my mockingbird

to return,

to bring me again

the sweetness

and the passion

of youth.
