Conquerors
T
HE boys who go to war afraid,
God pity them today.
The fiber of their nerves was formed
In some strange different way
From those of the reckless ones who go
With laughter and gay quips
To meet adventure. Boys afraid
Tighten their quivering lips.
Their faces blanch at sight of guns,
Their hearts do not behave;
And yet, thou knowest Lord, they are
The bravest of the brave,
As they move forward, duty bound,
Loathing, fearing and hating war:
The unseen heroes of the world,
Yet each a glorious conqueror.
