[1] The formal regress of inference rules was formulated by Lewis Carroll in "What the Tortoise Said to Achilles" (1895). Frank places the same difficulty within a broader argument concerning the limits of deriving new knowledge from what is already given.

[2] Nothing in this says a stone was once a person or that decisions accumulated into rock. Whose positing the stone is executing has not been answered yet, and the answer is not that small wills populated the early universe. Nor did determinacy arrive with nobody to settle it — an unauthored resolution is chance.

[3] Any pair would serve the same office. Money/John, jug/emptiness, left/right — each holds a division apart long enough for the slash to be read, and none of them names what the slash marks. A pair is required as an interval shows only between terms; the particular pair is not. Not/One is chosen for having the two candidates that a first term is usually given, and its work would be done by any other two that had already been cut.
