Chapter 29

A cut hardens when it is not withdrawn; hardening names an absence rather than a law. A trace may fade. The depth of an execution does not compel the next act. This leaves the question of what withdrawal is at the scale where hardening has become a world.
Ama-gi₄ named a cancellation, and what it could not name is the mother. She is Not/One: the break in which an obligation that had carved a person into a debtor loses its authority. Urukagina revoked a debt; at the scale where hardening has become a world, the same operation returns a form to the question it answered.
The return runs from the repetition to the settling — from nature to the act, from a transition presented as "always thus" to the positing. The mother is not in the past. She is the gap opened when sediment goes transparent and the cut becomes drawable again.
Withdrawal is the antithesis of dying. It is not a force opposing entropy or a promise that its direction can be globally reversed. Hardening is the absence of withdrawal; wherever an act remains possible, the cut can still be withdrawn. Each act of return is a delay of death — another turn in which the sediment does not command. The world persists while the dying is unfinished, and withdrawal extends the unfinishing.
Withdrawal must not become a program. A rule of perpetual withdrawal is the hardened form of this operation; a will that revokes on schedule is executing a schedule. The point is that the cut remains cancellable — that no cut has been permitted to present itself as necessity. Postulates are unavoidable, and a world without sediment would be a world in which no act could appear at all.
A return to the mother is no homecoming to a ground that will hold you. Not/One holds nothing; it is the event in which an established cut loses its hold. Whoever returns finds an abyss[5]: what he had taken for ground was sediment. He finds that the cut is his to draw again, which is not comfort. The account offers no rest at any stage: arrival would be death.
The men who first wrote the word ama-gi₄ knew unfreedom in their bodies — debt, and the chain that came with it — and for them the return to the mother was the road home, to their households. They did not call it achieving or becoming. Four thousand years of thought turned freedom into a noun, and each time this laid down a new debt: you must be free, freedom is your nature, realize yourself. The debt is discharged by taking on another nature — the citizen of the democracy, the believer conformed to God's will, the one who names the group he belongs to, the man who has found what he truly is and now owes it consistency. Liberation arrives as an assignment: here is what you are, be it without lapsing. Each is a new set of chains, whatever they are made of, and the cancelling of this is what ama-gi₄ first named. It does not say become; it says: return.
