choice left — indeed it could simply be an escape into the imagination. Few of us are really in such dire straits, but the ‘escapist’ aspect of life is not necessarily to be denied. Whilst it is a good thing to face reality with openness and honesty and to work for change where change is required, still there can be times when we can simply let go and spend time in pleasure, either actual or imagined. ‘Bread and circuses’, it has been suggested, are the things that keep the pains of the world at bay. Well you may feel I’m being a bit casual here! All this talk of souls and finding ways to change — then he tells us just to enjoy ourselves! But yes, sometimes — and this can be quite typical of times when we’re struggling — we take everything, including ourselves, a bit too seriously. The universe, I get the impression, is always ready to break out into a laugh! After all, the universe is built of paradox, contradiction and strange anomalies away from perfection, which seem to be needed in order to allow life to exist at all! So, well, what could be funnier than that!

We are only ever a moment away from hilarity! The difficulty with society and with ego is that they take themselves too seriously. Humour is a great way to take us from the economy of ascendancy back down into the economy of descendancy, where celebration rules.
