For the long run, like a minnow seeking the luxury of indifference while surrounded by piranhas, my face was cool, and always looked if it had been surprised, the expressive dark eyes the giveaway. I wore a belted brown suede raincoat that was heavily spotted with rain which I didn’t care to take to the cleaners. My brown trilby was always tilted rakishly, a desired affectation likely known only to an unspoken few.
