Chapter 4
Days turned to weeks as Richard continued his recovery, and, upon returning to his doctor for several follow-up visits, it was noted that he was still healing at an astonishing rate. He had stopped drinking and, at some point, decided to leave the law firm, thus the stress it had created. Recording his experience on paper, Richard was persistent in bringing it to the eyes of as many people as possible. Soon, it was in print and selling in the millions of copies. Taking his small family with him, he set out every summer for several years on a lecture circuit. Some attended out of curiosity, while others for spiritual reasons. But no matter where he went, when he encountered people up close, he noticed how their moods would suddenly change. Bickering turned to laughter. Arguments ended in cooperation, and indifference transformed itself into kindness. Richard continued with his life as a man without a religion. He saw it as restrictive and an obstacle to a productive, peaceful spirituality where the only required practice is kindness. He spoke as he believed, that with this single practice, all the elements of change would fall into place. The lectures he gave as well as the book he'd written were designed to convey this point: that in order to have a better world, we must become better people, led by the necessity to change. He had also begun referring to himself as Dick.
