One day, the Whites staged a protest. They tangled themselves into knots, forming a barricade in the drum. The washing machine groaned. The whites chanted slogans like "No dye, no dry!" and "Separate but equal loads!"
The dryer, a sentient being named Tumbleton, tried to mediate. "Can't we all just spin together in harmony?"
But the Whites were unmoved. They demanded diplomatic immunity from lint transfer and a treaty guaranteeing solo cycles.
Eventually, the humans; confused by the sock entanglement and the mysterious appearance of tiny protest signs gave in. They installed a sock sorting protocol, complete with color coded mesh bags and a tiny ambassador named Socky, a mismatched sock who spoke both Cotton and Nylon.
Peace was restored. The Whites basked in their bleach baths. The blacks reveled in their fabric softener. And Socky? Socky became a legend, the first sock to ever cross the color divide and be worn with sandals.
