In the pivotal season’s final game, down by three in the ninth inning, Seybold stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded. The crowd held its breath, except for Gary, who was busy eating a button. The pitcher; a merciless microfiber named VeloVelcro, wound up and threw.
Seybold swung.
The ball; a tightly wound ball of lint and dreams, soared over the dryer door, past the detergent shelf, and into legend.
Seventeen home runs and the league pennant.
The Thread Sox erupted. Unity, absurdity, and rebellion had won the day.
