Vision in Red
And it smiled.
Or at least, the smooth surface of its face seemed to ripple, to tear open in a mockery of a mouth. A horizontal slit of darkness that widened, showing not teeth, but an endless, empty void.
Amal grabbed Yasmin ’s arm. "We need to leave. Now."
"Why? What is it doing?"
"It's calling to them."
The watcher on the tower raised a hand. It pointed—not at them, but at the ground. At the bleeding, pulsing earth beneath the checkpoint.
And the ground began to shake.
Not an earthquake. Not an explosion. A vibration so intense it blurred Amal’s vision. The hum—the low moan she had heard earlier—rose in pitch, becoming a shriek.
Around them, the crowd stopped moving. People looked around, confused, frightened. "What was that? Did you feel that?"
"Run," Amal said. Her voice was calm, a strange island of stillness in the rising storm. She grabbed Yasmin ’s arm, her fingers digging in deep enough to bruise. "Don't look back. Just run."
They ran through the parking lot, past the startled taxi drivers, past the vendors overturning their carts in the sudden panic. The ground beneath their feet was no longer solid asphalt; it felt like walking on the skin of a breathing animal, shifting and heaving with every step.
Behind them, the sound of the checkpoint changed.
The mechanical clank of the turnstiles stopped. The shouting stopped. The honking horns fell silent.
For a second, there was absolute silence. Not the silence of peace, but the silence of a held breath before a scream.
And then, it came.
It was a sound that Amal would hear in her nightmares for the rest of her life. It wasn't a noise her ears could process. It vibrating in her skull, in her teeth, in the marrow of her bones. It was the sound of a thousand voices screaming at once. But they weren't screaming words. They were screaming silence. A blast of pure, concentrated psychic pressure that hit them like a physical shockwave.
Yasmin stumbled, falling to her knees in the dust. "My head! They're in my head!"
Amal dragged her up. "Keep moving! Don't let them in! Focus on your feet! Focus on the car!"
