And from that darkness, a voice spoke. Not Noor's voice. A voice like grinding stones.

WE ARE BUILDING A CATHEDRAL OF SILENCE.

Amal woke up screaming.

The sound tore out of her throat, ragged and loud, shattering the quiet of her bedroom. She sat up, gasping for air, clutching the sheets to her chest.

Noor was standing in the doorway, clutching her stuffed rabbit. "Mama?"

Amal stared at her daughter, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Noor," she rasped. "Noor, say something. Say anything."

"Are you okay?" Noor asked, her voice small and bewildered.

Amal closed her eyes, letting the sound wash over her. It was a beautiful sound. A precious sound. The sound of a human voice.

"I'm okay," Amal whispered, finding her own voice. "I'm okay. It was just... it was just a bad dream."

But later, as she made coffee in the kitchen, listening to the morning news drone on about airstrikes and casualties, she couldn't shake the feeling of that silence. It clung to her skin like a film. It filled the spaces between the reporter's words.

We are building a cathedral, the voice had said.

She looked at her phone. A message from Yasmin.

Can you come to the center? I have a new case. It's urgent.

Amal stared at the screen. She put down her coffee cup. The ceramic hit the saucer with a loud clink.

She cherished the sound. She memorized it. Because deep down, in a part of her mind that thought in shadows and red eyes, she knew the dream hadn't been a nightmare.

It had been a warning.

Part I: The Architecture of Silence

The new facility was cleaner than the basement clinic, but it held the same heavy, suffocating air.

It was a youth center in the Qalandia refugee camp—a single-story concrete building painted a cheerful, peeling yellow, sandwiched between an auto repair shop and a bakery that had been closed since the start of the war. Inside, the walls were covered with posters about resilience and education
