She was beginning to understand.

The watcher didn't move. Didn't speak. Didn't do anything that could be called communication in any normal sense. But as Amal watched, she became aware of something shifting in the quality of its presence. A lightening. A settling. As if her attention, her acknowledgment, had given it permission to exhale.

She stayed at the window until the first gray light of dawn began to creep over the rooftops. By then, the watcher had faded —not disappeared, but dimmed, retreating into the shadows as the world came awake. It would be back. They would all be back. But for one night, one of them had been seen.

For one night, that had to be enough.
