"Noor," Amal said slowly. "How do we find the names? How do we make sure they're remembered?"

Her daughter looked up at her, and for a moment, Amal saw something in those young eyes that made her heart ache—a weariness that no child should carry, a knowledge that no child should possess, a burden that had been placed on small shoulders because no one else was willing to bear it.

"We have to look," Noor said. "We have to keep looking, even when it hurts. And we have to tell people what we see. That's the only way."

Amal gathered her daughter into her arms, holding her close, feeling the small body pressed against her chest. Outside, the city settled into night, and the shadows grew longer, and somewhere in the darkness, things that were not quite soldiers stood at the places where blood had been spilled, watching and waiting for the world to forget.

But tonight, in one small apartment, two people were refusing to look away.

And somewhere in the darker dark, a watcher noticed.

And began to wait.
