Vision in Red

The air inside changed instantly. It was absolute stillness.

The Archive was a cavern.

Rows and rows of metal shelving units stretched out into the darkness. They were the rolling kind — the ones with the big turn-wheels at the end. They were packed floor-to-ceiling with cardboard boxes, binders, and rolls of maps.

The ceiling was low, crisscrossed with ventilation ducts that hummed with a throaty, wet sound.

Thump... thump...

It sounded like the building was breathing.

"It's huge," Yasmin whispered. The sound of her whisper died instantly, absorbed by the millions of pages of paper.

"Row 1948," Amal said. "Huda said it's in the 'Abandoned Property' section."

They walked down the central aisle. The fluorescent lights overhead flickered, casting jittery shadows.

Amal looked at the labels on the boxes.

Tax Records 1990-1995.

Land Seizures 2002.

Demolition Orders 2010.

It was a catalogue of catastrophe. Every box contained a tragedy. A family losing a home. A village losing a well.

"It's all here," Yasmin said, running her hand along a shelf. "Everything they did to us. They wrote it all down."

"That's the horror," Amal said. "They don't hide it. They boil it down. They turn a massacre into a memo. They turn a stolen home into a zoning infraction."

"Wait," Yasmin said. "What is this room?"

She pointed to a side door labeled Audio/Visual Preservation.

The door was slightly ajar.

"We shouldn't," Amal said.

"Huda said to look for everything."
